Information
International make-up guru, award-winning product designer and founder of the UK's premiere make-up academy...these are just a few terms used to describe Jemma Kidd.
One of the UK's most sought after backstage make up artists, Jemma has worked at New York and London fashion weeks and with the likes of Matthew Williamson, Naomi Campbell, Jerry Hall, Jade Jagger, and Sienna Miller.
Her Jemma Kidd Make Up School was founded in 2002 to 'provide budding professionals with the skills required by the modern make-up artist including creative design, facial architecture, digital media, business management and self representation.' Having jumped quickly on to the map as the professional school of choice, Jemma then turned her attention to developing a portfolio of non-professional workshops and master classes for individuals or small groups as well as her Masterclass@HOME Series. What a brilliant idea for a girlie gathering! Courses include Day to Evening, Mother & Daughter, Fabulous at 40, Teenage Beauty, One to One Tuition and Bespoke Party Box. Working with such a mix of women in the school, Jemma realised that 'millions of women throughout the world wear make-up but few have ever been taught to how apply it'. So she developed her own make-up line - where teaching and education sit right at the heart of it. The Jemma Kidd Make Up School collection takes all of Jemma's backstage and professional skills as an artist and translates them into a neatly edited range of 'must have' make-up essentials that are multipurpose, slimline and handbag friendly. Plus they come with step by step make-up lessons in every pack and heaps of professional tips.
All the products have professional, hi performance textures, combining the latest in skincare science and innovation with make-up. They're all packed full of the latest in peptides, actives, complexes and anti-oxidants as Jemma is obsessed with 'breathable' textures for radiant, luminous skin.
Quite clearly on a dedicated mission to make us apply our make up properly, we asked Jemma to tell us where most of us go wrong...(and how we can right it!)
1. Using the wrong colour foundation: Often people do this when trying to warm up their skin tone, but it's important to colour match your foundation perfectly so that it disappears onto the skin. If you cannot find the perfect match for your skin tone take one foundation that is slightly too light and one that is slightly too dark and mix them. Bring warmth to the skin using bronzers and blushers.
2. Using the wrong type of foundation: A liquid foundation absorbs well and is least likely to show in creases, so is a good option for mature skin. If you have oily skin opt for an oil free formula or use a mineral powder foundation. Remember to buff it properly to be sure it has absorbed.
3. Forgetting the brows: Well groomed eyebrows can really open up a face and give a polished, sophisticated look. If they are too heavy they can make the eyes look smaller and sunken and if they are too thin they can be ageing. Use an eyebrow powder (more natural than pencils) one shade lighter than your natural colour to fill in and shape the brows, extending the brow at the outer corner.
4. Using poor quality brushes: Good make-up brushes are a must, using poor quality ones will affect the finish to your make-up and will make it much harder to blend products into the skin. Good brushes give a softer, more professional finish and, if looked after, can last for years.
5. Not moisturising before applying make-up: Moisturising is vital and should never be skipped from your routine, it hydrates the skin, gets rid of dry areas, which tend to be accentuated by make-up, and provides a great base. It will also give skin a softer finish & make-up will glide on more easily. Pat in a generous amount of moisturiser and allow it to skin in before applying any make-up.
Some top tips from Jemma Kidd:
1. Don't pump the applicator wand in the mascara tube. Doing so will trap air inside and cause the mascara to dry out. Instead, twist the wand to collect more mascara on the brush.
2.Using your under-eye illuminating concealer, highlight above the arch of the brows and blend in. This will give a structural look to the brows.
3. If you apply a powdered blush or bronzer directly over your foundation it tends to look streaky or mottled. Make sure that you dust a fine layer of translucent powder over your foundation first to 'set it'. This will give your complexion a velvety finish and also provides the perfect canvas for your bronzer or blusher.
4.Using a crème highlighter, make a C shape from the arch underneath your brow down onto your cheekbone, stopping in line with the outer corner of your eye. It gives skin a fresh, radient look and is the perfect pick-me-up for tired skin.
5.Use cream formulas rather than powders wherever possible, as they have more staying power than powders and give a more nautral finish.
6.Try using a primer under your foundation. Some of these not only have SPF, but also add a glow to skin - the primer sinks in as a base which foundation sticks to far better.
7.Really push your foundation into the skin rather than just rubbing it on. It will give a more natural finish and has more staying power.
8.Lip tints are perfect for giving long lasting colour. Apply with a lip brush to give strong, structured lips or simply dab onto the centre of your lip with your finger to give a natural flush of colour.
9.When applying your blusher it is important that the brush you are using is not too large. Opt for a brush about the size of your fingertip as it will give you much more control with your application.
