If you haven't heard of Kathy Philips, Founder of this works you simply cannot call yourself a beauty guru...yet. But let us enlighten you. Kathy is the Ex Beauty Director of British Vogue and she developed the 'this works' range with a vision of combining aromatherapy and excellence. She describes her brilliant products as 'a therapeutic force' but she balances them with delicately balanced fragrances that benefit moods and emotions.

Named 'this works' because that's what testers constantly said of the products, the line is a survival kit for those suffering modern malaises, 'a no-fuss way to use aromatherapy in everyday life'.

User friendly and sweet smelling as the products may be, Kathy is serious about aromatherapy. She told us,

"On a physical level essential oils can penetrate into the bloodstream and have many positive benefits, such as increasing blood circulation and promoting skin cell renewal. If inhaled they work very well within the respiratory system, helping clear infections and allergies. On an emotive level, the aromas of essential oils can trigger memories and emotions- the sense of smell is one of the most primitive of our senses and is linked to some of the deepest parts of the brain."

We managed to get Kathy to answer some of our questions...

Why should we buy This Works?

Because it does. Having spent a lot of my career testing products, I just want something gorgeous and as natural as possible that does the job. I want bath oil that makes me feel really spoilt and which calms me down or revs me up according to my mood. I want great texture and wonderful smells plus long term benefits as well.

We hear your reputation in the beauty industry is pretty gold plated, do tell?

Well, we [Beauty Editors] spend years talking to scientists, chemists, formulators and innovators, not to mention testing and comparing products over time and that's how we learn what is special and what isn't.

We know you work with some fantastic essential oil blends, why choose essential oils?

Aromatherapy is all about the use of essential oils combined, ideally with massage. I see it as cosmetic medicine. The oils are extracted from plants which have long been known to have healing powers. I love the idea of producing products in the simplest way that counteract the strains and stresses of life. 

If we could only buy one product, what should it be?

You have to start with Skin Dry Leg Oil. There may be a million moisturisers out there but do they really rebuild and re-hydrate the skin? I used to have a glass bottle of this oil made up for me to take on holiday - now I use it all over.

And if we had a bit more to spend...what should we treat ourselves to?

I can't live without my bath oils, especially Energy Bank which gives me the energy I need at the end of the day to get up and party. I also love our Clean Skin because of its naturalness, then there's Perfect Cleavage, Active Serum and the Active Face oil and..... and.....
